Benefits

Drains fast: the chunky texture lets water move through quickly and resists compaction, so roots aren't left sitting in water. That lowers the risk of overwatering.

Made without soil: it doesn't bring garden soil into your pots.

Supports root development: the mix contains mycorrhizae, which colonize the roots and help them reach water and nutrients in more of the pot.

Slow to break down: the clay pebbles hold their shape and the bark breaks down slowly, so the mix stays open between repottings.

Ingredients

Ingredients, largest first: coco chips, Douglas fir and pine bark, a peat-based growing mix with mycorrhizae, expanded clay pebbles (LECA), worm castings, coco coir and biochar.

Peat: low peat content. The base of the mix is coco chips and bark.

Description

Quick answer: what is Molly's Aroid Mix?

  • For: Monstera, Philodendron, Pothos, Anthurium, Alocasia, Syngonium and the rest of the aroid family, plus Hoya and most tropical foliage plants.
  • What's in it: coco chips, Douglas fir and pine bark, expanded clay (LECA), a peat-based growing mix with mycorrhizae, worm castings, coco coir and biochar. Low-peat and soil-free.
  • Why it works: aroids grow as climbers in the wild, with their roots in bark and open air. The chunky structure drains quickly and keeps air pockets around the roots, which lowers the risk of overwatering.
  • Ready to use: straight from the bag. No mixing.
  • Not for: succulents, cacti or orchids. Use Molly's Succulent Mix or Molly's Orchid Mix.

More guidance: Best soil for Monstera, Potting soil vs potting mix.

Aroids such as Monstera, Philodendron and Anthurium grow as climbers in the wild, with roots that hold onto bark and sit in moving air. In a pot they do best in a chunky mix that drains quickly and doesn't pack down. Dense potting soil holds more water and less air around the roots.

Molly's Aroid Mix is built for that. Coco chips and two kinds of bark give it a coarse, open structure, clay pebbles keep the air pockets from collapsing, and a smaller share of peat-based mix, coir and worm castings holds moisture between waterings.

What's in the bag

  • Coco chips: the largest ingredient. Chunky pieces of coconut husk that hold some water and keep the mix open.
  • Douglas fir and pine bark: coarse bark for structure and air space.
  • Peat-based growing mix with mycorrhizae: holds moisture. The mycorrhizal fungi colonize roots and support root development.
  • Expanded clay pebbles (LECA): hard pellets that hold their shape and keep air pockets open.
  • Worm castings: a small organic fraction.
  • Coco coir: fine coconut fiber that evens out moisture.
  • Biochar: a small amount.

Low-peat and soil-free. The mix has some nutrients but isn't a fertilizer.

Plants this is for

  • Monstera: deliciosa, adansonii, Thai Constellation, Albo.
  • Philodendron, Pothos, Scindapsus, Epipremnum: climbing and trailing aroids.
  • Anthurium, Alocasia, Syngonium, Aglaonema: tropical foliage aroids.
  • Also suited to: Calathea and other prayer plants, Peace Lily, ZZ plant, snake plant, Hoya, Fiddle Leaf Fig and palms.

Not for: succulents and cacti (use Molly's Succulent Mix) or orchids (use Molly's Orchid Mix).

Repotting

  1. Choose a pot 1 to 2 inches wider than the current root ball, with drainage holes.
  2. Ease the plant out and shake off loose old soil.
  3. Add about an inch of mix to the bottom, set the plant at the same depth as before and fill in around the roots. Tap the pot to settle the mix; don't press it down.
  4. Water thoroughly once and let it drain. Water again when the top inch is dry.

Watering

Most aroids in this mix need water every 7 to 14 days indoors, depending on light, temperature and pot size. Check the top inch with a finger first: the mix dries from the top down, so a dry surface doesn't always mean a dry root zone. Water evenly over the whole surface and empty the saucer.

Sizing and coverage

Filling empty pots, one 5 dry quart (5.5 L) bag fills about 8 four-inch pots, 4 to 5 five-inch pots, or 2 to 3 six-inch pots. When you repot a plant that already has a root ball, the same bag covers about 10 to 12 four-inch, 6 to 8 five-inch, or 4 to 6 six-inch pots. Larger bags scale with volume.

Why Choose VeryPlants?

  1. Each Molly's mix is formulated for a different plant group. See this product's ingredient list and care guidance to choose the right blend for your plants.
  2. Built for containers, not gardens. Outdoor soil works because rain, wind, and earthworms refresh it constantly. Indoor pots get none of that. Our mixes are engineered for the way plants actually grow inside your home: chunky, fast-draining, slow to compact.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best aroid mix?
A chunky, fast-draining, soil-free mix with plenty of air space: coarse chips and bark for structure, something that holds moisture such as coir or a little peat, and hard pellets such as LECA that keep the air pockets open. Molly's Aroid Mix is built to that spec for Monstera, Philodendron, Anthurium and the rest of the aroid family.
What plants is Molly's Aroid Mix for?
The aroid family: Monstera, Philodendron, Pothos, Anthurium, Alocasia, Colocasia, Syngonium, ZZ plant, Peace Lily and most tropical climbers with aerial roots. It also suits other tropicals that want a chunky, fast-draining mix, including Hoya, Ficus, bird's nest ferns and most tropical Begonias. It isn't recommended for succulents, cacti or orchids.
How is Molly's Aroid Mix different from regular potting soil?
Regular potting soil is fine-textured and holds water for longer. Molly's Aroid Mix is soil-free and chunky: coco chips, bark and clay pebbles leave air pockets around the roots and let water drain through quickly, which lowers the risk of overwatering.
What's in Molly's Aroid Mix?
Coco chips, Douglas fir and pine bark, expanded clay pebbles (LECA), a peat-based growing mix with mycorrhizae, worm castings, coco coir and biochar, largest ingredient first. It's low-peat and contains no garden soil.
Does Molly's Aroid Mix include fertilizer?
The mix has some nutrients but isn't a fertilizer. Fertilize 3 to 4 times a year at the dose on your fertilizer's label. You can skip midwinter and feed in spring, summer and fall.
How often should I water aroids in Molly's Aroid Mix?
Most aroids in this mix need water every 7 to 14 days indoors. Check the top inch with a finger before watering, because the mix dries from the top down. Water evenly until it drains from the bottom, then empty the saucer.
How often should I repot or refresh the mix?
Plan on about once a year, which usually lines up with moving the plant up a pot size. It's due sooner if water runs straight through, the bark has broken down into fine pieces, or the mix smells sour. Old mix clinging to the root ball can go into the new pot.
Can I mix it with regular potting soil?
You can, but it brings back the dense texture the mix is designed to avoid. To make a bag go further, mix it with extra bark or perlite instead.
How many plants will one bag pot?
Filling empty pots, one 5 dry quart (5.5 L) bag fills about 8 four-inch pots, 4 to 5 five-inch pots, or 2 to 3 six-inch pots. When you repot a plant that already has a root ball, the same bag covers about 10 to 12 four-inch, 6 to 8 five-inch, or 4 to 6 six-inch pots. Larger bags scale with volume.
