Best Soil for Philodendron: Why Aroid Mix Wins

Use a chunky aroid mix: bark, perlite, biochar, coco coir.

Avoid standard bagged potting soil. It compacts, holds water, and rots philodendron roots within months.

Why: philodendrons are aroids. In the wild they climb tree trunks as hemi-epiphytes, roots anchored in bark and leaf litter, not buried in dense soil.

Repot every 12 to 18 months, or whenever roots push out the drainage holes, water runs straight through, or new leaves come in smaller.

After the switch, water thoroughly, then let the top inch dry out. Aroid mix dries faster than soil, so expect to water less often, not more.

Philodendrons belong to the Araceae family, the same one as monstera, pothos, anthurium, ZZ plant, and peace lily. All of them are forest understory or canopy species that anchor to trees and take moisture from humid air, rainwater, and damp bark rather than from saturated ground. Their roots evolved for two jobs: grip on a vertical surface, and gas exchange.

Standard bagged potting soil is engineered for the opposite plant. It is heavy in peat, built to hold water for shallow-rooted annuals through a summer. Pot a philodendron in it and three things happen over a few months: the soil compacts under its own weight, the air pockets disappear, and roots that need oxygen begin to drown. Yellowing leaves and mushy stems are the visible end of a process that started underground.

The four pillars of the mix

  1. Orchid or fir bark, in chunky pieces. Structure, grip for aerial roots, and slow breakdown. This is the load-bearing element.
  2. Perlite or pumice. Holds air pockets open, prevents compaction, lets water drain through quickly. The white specks in a good bag.
  3. Biochar. Porous, so it takes up salts and impurities from tap water and fertiliser and keeps the mix from turning stale.
  4. Coco coir or chunky sphagnum. Holds enough moisture between waterings without going soggy. Coir is the peat-free option; sphagnum works similarly but breaks down faster.

What you don’t want: peat-heavy potting soil, garden topsoil, sand on its own, or anything marketed as “all-purpose”. These compact, drown the roots, or both. For background, see our soilless potting mix primer.

Signs your philodendron is in the wrong soil

  • Yellowing older leaves near the base. Usually roots starved of oxygen because the soil is too dense.
  • Mushy black or brown stems at the soil line. Rot has reached the crown. Act within days.
  • Soil still wet a week after watering. The mix is holding water the roots cannot use.
  • Water running straight off the surface. The opposite problem: old peat-heavy soil has dried into a hydrophobic block.
  • New leaves smaller than the old ones. The plant is rationing energy because the root system is compromised.
  • Fungus gnats around the pot. A symptom of consistently wet soil that isn’t draining.

Two or more together, especially in a plant that came home from a big-box garden centre in the last six months, almost always points to a soil swap.

How to repot into aroid mix

The repotting is straightforward. The care afterwards is where most people lose plants, so read the last step carefully.

  1. Pick the right pot. Go up one size only, 1 to 2 inches in diameter. Philodendrons prefer being slightly rootbound, and an oversized pot holds wet mix the roots never reach. Drainage holes are mandatory. For climbers, a deeper pot with a moss pole beats a shallow wide one.
  2. Remove the plant carefully. Tip the pot sideways and ease the rootball out; run a knife around the inside edge if it resists. Never yank by the stem, especially on self-heading types where the stem carries the whole crown. If the old soil is wet and compacted, soak the rootball in lukewarm water for ten minutes and rinse it away.
  3. Inspect and trim. Healthy roots are pale yellow to white, firm, slightly fleshy. Rotten ones are dark, mushy, and smell sour. Cut those away with clean scissors. If most of the root system has gone, take cuttings from healthy stems instead: climbing varieties root easily.
  4. Repot at the same depth. An inch of mix in the bottom, centre the plant, fill around the roots. Pat to settle but never compress: the air pockets are the whole point. Bury the crown deeper than it was and you recreate the rot problem. Install a moss pole now if you’re using one.
  5. Water deeply, then wait. Water until it runs out the bottom and let it drain fully. Then leave it until the top inch is dry. Most people overwater for the first month after switching because they’re used to a thirstier substrate.

Firm leaves and new growth within 4 to 6 weeks means the soil swap worked.

Climbers vs self-headers

Philodendrons come in two growth habits. The soil is identical for both. Pot shape, support, and watering frequency are what differ.

Climbing (vining)

Heartleaf, Brasil, Micans, Lemon Lime, Cordatum, plus rarer cultivars like Pink Princess and Florida Beauty. They send out long vines with aerial roots that want to grip something vertical. A standard 6 to 8 inch pot with the support anchored deep. As the plant climbs, the leaves get larger, because the aerial roots find moisture and nutrients in the damp moss.

Self-heading

Hope Selloum, Xanadu, Birkin, Imperial Red, Imperial Green, Prince of Orange. These form a central crown and grow outward in a rosette, getting wider rather than longer. They want wider pots (8 to 14 inches depending on the cultivar) and no climbing support at all. Their roots fill the pot horizontally.

Common questions

What is the best soil for a philodendron?

A chunky, soilless aroid mix of bark, perlite, biochar, and coco coir. The structure matters as much as the ingredients: philodendron roots evolved for grip and air, not for saturated ground.

Can I use the same soil for philodendron and monstera?

Is aroid mix the same as orchid mix?

No. Both are chunky and bark-based, but orchid mix is almost all bark with very little moisture-holding material, because orchid roots are exposed and want to dry quickly. Aroid mix adds coir or sphagnum. Orchid mix on a philodendron works, but you will water two to three times as often.

My philodendron came in nursery soil. Repot immediately?

Not always. Nursery soil is usually peat-based and fine for the first few months. Wait until you see one of the warning signs above, or until the plant has settled in for four to six months. Repotting a newly arrived plant too soon adds stress on top of stress.

Can philodendron grow in just water?

Most climbing varieties can, long-term. Change the water weekly, add a few drops of dilute hydroponic fertiliser monthly, and use a clear container so you can watch the roots. Self-heading varieties are much harder to keep in water because of their crown structure.

Do philodendrons need a moss pole?

Only climbing varieties benefit. Vining types produce larger, more mature leaves when their aerial roots can grip a moist support. A coir-wrapped or moss-stuffed pole two to three feet tall, kept damp, changes growth within months. Self-headers don’t climb and don’t need one.
