Cactus Soil: The Right Gritty Mix and Ratio
The quick answer
Cactus soil is a gritty, mineral-dominant potting mix, not bagged potting soil and not garden dirt. A good one is mostly coarse mineral aggregate — pumice, lava rock, coarse grit — with only a small structural organic fraction, so water runs straight through and the pot dries out completely within a few days. Cacti evolved on rock and grit where rain drains away in seconds, and they store their own water. The mix's job is drainage and air, not nutrition.
The catch: most bags labelled “cactus soil” are mostly potting soil with a little sand stirred in. The problem is the proportion, not any single ingredient — a mix that is predominantly fine organic matter holds water for days indoors regardless of what the front of the bag says. And sand does not fix drainage: fine sand can pack tighter, not looser. Judge the bag by its texture. Real cactus soil looks and feels like gravel.

What is cactus soil, exactly?
“Cactus soil” is a category, not a recipe, and that is why bags vary so much. What every good version has in common is a high proportion of coarse mineral particles and very little fine organic matter.

What good cactus soil does not have much of: fine compost, water-retaining crystals, added fertilizer, or any large proportion of moisture-holding organic matter. Cacti are adapted to lean ground, and rich mixes hold water for days indoors.
Do cacti actually need a special mix? Yes — but “special” means structural, not exotic. Indoors a pot gets a fraction of the airflow and sun a desert does, so soil that would dry in a day outdoors can stay damp for a week on a windowsill. The mix is the control you actually have. A gritty mineral-dominant mix physically cannot hold standing water the way a predominantly organic one does, which makes it far easier to water a cactus without leaving it sitting wet.
The ratio: how to make cactus soil
There is no single correct recipe. But there is a reliable ratio, and it is easier to hit than most guides make it sound. Work in parts by volume — 7 parts mineral to 3 parts organic — and use any consistent scoop. A large yogurt tub is fine.

Optional, a small handful each per 10 scoops: horticultural charcoal for extra structure, and a pinch of ground limestone if your water is very soft.
Adjustments that matter
- True desert cacti — barrel, Mammillaria, Opuntia, most globular species — do better pushed harder toward mineral, around 8:2. These plants sit dry for months in the wild.
- Leafy succulents in the same pot family tolerate the standard 7:3 comfortably.
- Small pots dry faster than large ones. In a 3-inch pot, 7:3 is already very fast; in a 10-inch pot you may want the full 8:2.
- Terracotta dries faster than glazed or plastic. If you are potting into plastic, go more mineral.
- Rinse your grit. Pumice and lava rock arrive dusty, and the dust is the fine fraction that clogs drainage. Rinse until the water runs clear.
The test that tells you if you got it right: pot the plant, water it thoroughly, then come back in three to four days. The mix should already feel dry a couple of inches down. If it is still damp, add more mineral.
What DIY actually costs. Buying pumice, lava rock and bark separately usually means buying more of each than one batch needs. Expect $25 to $40 in inputs to build your first few quarts, dropping steeply after that because you will have grit left over for years. If you repot often, DIY is the cheaper path. If you have three cacti and one weekend, it is not.
Can you use regular potting soil for a cactus?
Not on its own. Standard potting soil is built around fine organic matter, which holds moisture for days and compacts over time. Around a cactus that means the roots sit damp and airless.
If potting soil is what you have, cut it. Mix it no more than 1 part potting soil to 2 parts mineral grit — pumice, coarse perlite or lava rock. That gets you most of the way to a workable mix. Going 50/50 is not enough for a cactus.
One behaviour worth knowing: once a peat-heavy mix dries out completely it becomes water-repellent, so the first watering after a long dormancy channels down the sides of the pot instead of soaking through. Mineral-dominant mixes rewet evenly straight away. If your cactus sulks after its first spring watering, uneven rewetting is a likely cause.
Is cactus soil acidic? What pH do cacti want?
Most cacti are comfortable in the slightly acidic to neutral range, roughly pH 6.0 to 7.5, and very few houseplant growers ever need to measure it. Mixes built mostly from fine organic matter trend more acidic. Mineral aggregates are close to neutral, and blends that include a trace of limestone are buffered nearer neutral deliberately.
In practice: if your mix is mostly mineral, pH is not the variable to worry about. Drainage is.
Can you use cactus soil for other plants?
Cactus mix is one of the more useful things to have on a shelf, because plenty of plants want faster drainage than a bag of potting soil gives them. But “faster drainage” is not the same as “the same drainage.”

The general rule: the further a plant is from arid, rocky ground, the more you cut cactus mix with something that holds water.
How often to water a cactus in gritty mix
Soak, then wait for bone dry. Water thoroughly until it runs out the drainage hole, discard whatever collects in the saucer, then leave it alone until the mix is dry all the way through.
Pot size, light and material all shift this, so use the mix rather than the calendar: if in doubt, wait. The whole point of a mineral mix is that it dries fast and predictably, which is what makes a soak-and-dry rhythm safe to follow.
Feeding: lightly, and only in the growing season. A dilute balanced feed once a month in spring and summer is plenty. Cacti are adapted to lean ground and overfeeding produces weak, stretched growth.
