Succulents and cacti come from rocky, fast-draining ground, and their roots are built for a quick soak followed by a dry spell. A mix that stays wet for days works against that.

Molly's Succulent Mix is mostly volcanic grit (lava rock, akadama, hyuga and pumice) with a little pine bark to stop it drying to a brick. Water runs through quickly and the mix dries out between waterings.

What's in the bag

Red and black lava rock: the main ingredient. Hard, porous grit that keeps the mix open.
Akadama (Double Red Line hard grade): Japanese volcanic clay granules that hold a little moisture inside each granule. The hard grade breaks down slowly.
Hyuga: a light, porous volcanic stone from Japan, widely used in bonsai mixes.
Pine bark: a small organic share that keeps the mix from drying to a brick.
Pumice: light volcanic stone that holds a little water and lets the rest drain.
Peat-based growing mix with mycorrhizae: a small amount. The mycorrhizal fungi colonize roots and support root development.

About 80% mineral by volume. Low-peat, with no worm castings and no garden soil.

Choose a pot only slightly larger than the root mass, with drainage holes. An oversized pot holds extra moisture in the unused mix. The lava rock, hyuga and pumice don't decompose and the hard akadama breaks down slowly, so most plants can stay in the mix until they outgrow the pot, typically 2 to 3 years.
